UK School Games

Bournemouth Sports Table Tennis Club

On the 3-6 September Amy Blagbrough took part in the UK Sainsbury's School Games held in Manchester. This is one of the major youth events of the season and is run along the lines of the Junior Olympics with the home countries and various regions of England competing. Amy was representing South West England along with Letitia McMullen, Jazmin Johns and Katie Holt. She was one of 1600 athletes taking part in twelve sports, including disability events and stayed at the athletes’ village. The opening ceremony was a fantastic event with a variety of dance and music acts and guest appearances from sports stars Dina Asher-Smith, Adam Peaty and Ellie Simmonds.
The competition started early on the morning of the 4th. South West England was in a group with South East England, North East England and Ireland, with the top two teams to qualify for the semi-finals. After a long day of matches it came down to the final game of the day between Amy and Jasmine Wong (NE England). Whoever won would put their team through to the semi-finals. Jasmine started brilliantly and won the first two sets, however Amy raised her game and playing some fantastic table tennis won the next three sets and the match.
The next day saw the first of the semi-final matches which unfortunately South West England lost against North West England, which meant they were up against Scotland for the bronze medal position. Again, great performances from the girls saw them brush aside the Scottish team and claim a podium finish. The last day saw the individual events with Amy winning her group and reaching the last sixteen, with a couple of great wins against both the Wales and Scotland number two ranked players. It also relevant that Amy is in fact just out of the cadets, a first-year junior and playing against older, more experienced players. The closing ceremony finished off what was a very enjoyable, tiring but rewarding four days.
