Senior British League 2nd Weekend

Bournemouth Sports Table Tennis Club

The 2nd weekend for the Senior British League was played on the 1st and 2nd November, and was played at Drumchapel Table tennis Club all the way up in Glasgow.

So our Bournemouth Sports team of Steve Beerling, Nathan Bingham, Hugo Pang and Steve Foster endured the painfully long journey on the Friday. Leaving at 10.45am and arriving at 12.20am, meeting with and travelling up with the London Academy team in their mini bus.

Our results over the weekend are; 8-0 loss to Drumchapel Glasgow, 7-1 loss to Ormesby, 8-0 loss to Barrow and our first win of the season winning 6-2 against Kingfisher. It was a tough weekend with many close matches where 8-0 defeats could have easily have been 6-2 or even 4-4. Noticeable close matches were Hugo losing to Richard Main (Ranked top 10 in Scotland) 11-8 in the 5th from Drumchapel and Steve B losing to Drumchapel’s number 1 player for the weekend Sung Meng Cheng 11-4 in the 5th. Nathan almost had the victory of his life having a match point (10-9 in the 4th) against Darius Knight England number 7 in England but unfortunately eventually losing out 11-5 in the 5th.

Even after suffering defeat after defeat we kept our heads up and kept fighting and well deservedly we got our first win of the season against Kingfisher, 6-2, who we only lost to 5-3 to after being 3-1 up when we played them the first time round. They did have a weakened team without their number 1 Tom Maynard who suffering from a hip injury, but even without him they were still favourites to win according to ranking and every win we had was against a higher ranked opponent. Both Steve B and Hugo played very well to beat top junior Marcus Giles, especially Hugo who has lost to him many times in the past, but this time Hugo outplayed him to win 3-1. Steve F played well especially against David Barr who is one of the highest ranked defenders in the country. There were many long rallies and eventually Steve pulled through 14-12 in the 4th.

All in the team had improved their performance from the first weekend of matches. Nathan struggled to perform and the level he can but with a full time job and studying at the same time, he has found it difficult to find the time to train.

The next round of matches are on Sunday 25th January 2015 at London Academy.
